Burera: Youth urged to support family planning campaign
On 28th December 2011, Members of Parliament in the chamber of deputies urged the Youth in Burera district, Northern Province of Rwanda to participate in the struggle against population increase. The call was made by members of parliament during their visit to the district in abid to sensitize citizens on the benefits of applying family planning methods.
The lawmakers in charge of social wellbeing of citizens held discussions with more than 150 adults from different sectors of the district The delegation indicated that that Rwandan population is now 11 million compared to 4 million of people who were registered in 1978 indicating the impact of this abrupt population increase on the environment and the country’s development in general.
According to the national research on population, Rwanda’s population is estimated to increase to 21.5 million in 2035 which does not much exactly with the available land resources.
Reacting to this isuue, the youth proposed the government to impose sanctions on Parents who give birth to children who they are not able to raise. They also asked these officials to conduct a research on how unwanted pregnancies can legally be aborted as one way of population decrease.
Member of Parliament Kayitesi Liberata asked Burera youth to act as role models in sensitizing their fellow citizens on family planning programs which the youth admitted and promised to do their level best and change their Parents local attitudes.
