Rwanda Police honored for outstanding service in South Sudan
United Nations has awarded 24 Rwandan police officers for their exemplary and professionalism in executing the peacekeeping duties in South Sudan.
The awarding of medals and certificates took place on January 29 in South Sudan and was presided over by Hilde Johnson, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan UNMISS) Special Representative of the Secretary General for South Sudan.
The awarded officers are part of the contingent deployed last year, to work as monitors and mentors of the South Sudan police force in a bid to professionalise the force.
They also train the South Sudan police force and guide them in the community policing strategies.
Hilde thanked the Rwandan police contingent and leadership for their exemplary service and performance.
â€œIt is important to appreciate work done by Rwandan Police Contingent as well as their Military colleagues. They work as one team in the larger international community in South Sudan, to aspire to a democratic and stable environment,â€ she said.
Rwanda maintains over 460 police officers in various UN missions.
â€œI am pleased to acknowledge the role of President Paul Kagame for his commitment and tangible support to the UN in general and in UNMISS in particular,â€ she added.
The UNMISS Police Commissioner, Dr Fred Yiga, thanked the officers for their discipline and outstanding work.
â€œThis is not only a medal reflecting the length of service, but the quality of service too,â€ said Yiga.
He added that as a citizen of the Great Lakes region, he was aware of the Rwandan History, and that he was â€œdeeply proud with the achievement of the Rwandan contingent.â€
At the same occasion, Chief Superintendent Francis Nkwaya handed the SRSG and UNPOL Commissioner with plaques in appreciation of their support and encouragement to the UNPOL and specifically to the Rwanda National Police.
The event was also attended by the Rwanda Military Contingent Commander, Brigadier Andrew Kagame, Rwanda Aviation Unit Contingent Commander, Lt Col Chance Ndagano, Senior RDF officers.
