Ngororero: 19th Genocide commemoration to bring changes

While Rwanda nears 19th commemoration to take place in April 2013, IBUKA (non-profit organization) has chosen grey as the colour to be used during commemoration period instead of purple.

Mrs. Julienne Mukamukesha, worker in National Commission for the fight against genocide operating in Ngororero and Gakenke districts, said this during the meeting to prepare 19th commemoration preparations in Ngororero district.

Purple colour on the gates and other areas of memorial sites will be changed to grey

Mukamukesha explains changing the color was a result of the need to imitate our ancestors who used ash color (grey) to mourn the dead. Rwandans find it worthy to use the color of the ancestors than adopting a foreign color.

Striving for dignity through using ancient color corresponds with the theme “Let’s remember our dear genocide victims as we strive for self reliance” basing on economy, culture and knowledge.

Some residents who think that changing colour on memorial sites might cost money have been assured that it will be a gradual process depending on the capacity.

IBUKA is the umbrella organization that connects the groups that aid survivors of the 1994 Rwandan Genocide.
