UN has a responsibility to stand against evil –UN Resident Coordinator
The One UN Resident Coordinator Lamin Momodou Manneh has said that the UN has a responsibility to future generations worldwide by taking a stand against evil and standing up for human dignity.
He made the remarks while officiating at the event to mark the 19th anniversary of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Manneh noted that progress had been made in fighting impunity for crimes against humanity and According to him; organizations such as the International Criminal Court and the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda are working to bring those responsible for the genocide to justice
Speaking at the event, the Executive Secretary of CNLG, Mr. Mucyo Jean de Dieu, thanked all those who turned up to join Rwandans to remember the more than one million massacred in 1994.
He called on everyone to uphold the value of dignity and self-reliance which is commonly known in Rwanda and Rwandan communities across the world as Agaciro.
Mucyo noted that the Genocide was stopped by Rwandans under the banner of the RPF-Inkotanyi to topple the Genocidal regime.
“Remembering the Genocide victims is an obligation for every Rwandan and we remember to fight those who are bent on denying or trivialising Genocide, whether they are Rwandans or foreigners. It is also our role, to teach and pass on that responsibility to the youth so that they, in turn, can pass it on to successive generations.â€
“We appreciate that some countries have started to follow up and apprehend Genocide suspects in their territory, and some have even been repatriated to Rwanda,†said Mucyo.
He said however, that it has come late even when these countries have known for a long time that they had an obligation to arrest those suspected of genocide and have them tried.
This year’s commemoration is, conducted under the theme, “Commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi by striving for Self-Reliance.
