The classification of all Rwandans depending on their economic standing was launched at the grassroots level across Musanze district, with some local leaders seeking from residents data about their standard of living.

Musanze district is reviewing Ubudehe categories to reflect the current economic status.

Speaking to this website, one of the local leaders, Nadine Munezero, executive secretary of Mpenge cell, Muhoza sector in Musanze district, said the process is smooth as no resident claimed being wrongly assessed.

At the launch of the review of Ubudehe, Munezero urged all residents to tell the truth about their economic standing as well as in the way they describe their neighbours’ living standards.

Before the reform, the six categories were umutindi nyakujya (those in abject poverty), umutindi (the very poor), umukene (the poor), umukene wifashije (the resourceful poor), umukungu (with abundant food) and umukire (the rich).

Munezero explained that the information required will be used in advising the vulnerable residents to work with local authorities on how to fight poverty.

After the review, all residents and local authorities will meet to confirm the category of every person.
