President Paul Kagame received his Burundian counterpart, Pierre Nkurunziza early this morning in Huye district, a border town to Burundi in Southern Rwanda.

The two presidents discussed Burundi’s political turmoil and insecurity concerns that has caused an influx of Burundian refugees to Rwanda.

Rwanda’s Southern region is currently pressured by Burundian refugees running from pro-government militias,Imbonerakure, who are accused of several killings andlooting.

Imbonerakure are allegedly attacking people opposed to President Nkurunziza’s attempts to seek another term in office. Nkurunziza has already served two constitutional terms, but his country will head to polls this year, of which he has presented his candidature.

More details regarding the meeting are yet to be established, but President Kagame toldjournalists the he believes Burundi still had capability of solving its own problems.

“I believe that Burundi has the capacity to resolve their own issues…but we are here to assist,” he said.

Over 4000 Burundian refugees (629 men, 986 women and 2335 children) have fled intoRwanda and are sheltered at Biryogo refugee camp in Gashora sector, Bugesera district in Eastern Province.
