Ubumuntu festival expected to inspire Kigali

Anew multicultural arts festival with the aim of promoting humanity using past experiences is set for this weekend in Kigali.

The Ubumuntu festival will have performers from three countries and will aim at sparking the use of art in civic dialogue and ensuring the artists can live off their creations.

At a press conference, Maija Rivenburg, the spokesperson for the festival noted that arts can be used as a form of peace building and preventing inhumane atrocities.

“Art is a powerful tool of sharing, communicating and expressing opinions and all aspects of life that affect humanity, but worldwide the arts industry has been omitted or not given the importance it deserves,” she noted.

Performers will come from 13 countries with the organisers aiming to make it an annual event that will take place in the last days of the commemoration period of the Genocide against the Tutsi.

“We aim to have this festival as a bridge for people from different countries to learn from each other,” she added.

Performances will take place at the amphitheater at the Gisozi memorial centre.
