RNP tips road users on accident prevention
Rwanda National Police (RNP) has called on road users in Gashora Sector of Bugesera District particularly commercial motorcyclists to take the lead in prevention of accidents.
Records indicate that motorcyclists constituted the highest percentage of people involved in accidents in Bugesera District.
During the meeting Police urged residents to uphold traffic rules to ensure efficient and effective prevention of road accidents.
Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP) Cyprien Uwitonze, the Bugesera District Community Policing Officer (DCLO), asked motorcyclists and other road users to watch over each other and ensure no one is involved in the accident.
Uwitonze was speaking at a meeting that drew over 70 motorcyclists in Gashora and Ramiro taxi parks respectively.
He blamed road accidents on carelessness of some road users particularly commercial motorcyclist who do not respect traffic rules.
He pointed out to over speeding, drunkardness, poor mechanical conditions of motorcycles and recklessness as the main causes of road accidents.
â€œPrevention of road accidents is a responsibility of every road user,â€ he noted calling upon motorcyclists to make a personal efforts to abide by all traffic rules to ensure road safety is maintained.
â€œRoad accidents destroy not only lives but also properties including motorcycles. This is a serious issue that could effectively be resolved by different players including riders themselves,â€ he said.
AIP Uwitonze also appealed to those wishing to engage in the business to first acquire a driving license should they need to avoid some necessary troubles.
He further urged taxi motorcycle operators to shun being part of illegal business like trafficking of narcotic drugs and importantly share timely information on suspects.
