Gatsibo: Theft on the Increase in Kiramuruzi

Residents blame crime levels on lack of street lighting

Residents blame crime levels on lack of street lighting

The lack of street lighting in various areas of Kiramuruzi Trading Centre is being blamed by residents for the high levels of crime targeting traders and road users.

Residents claim that criminals take advantage of the cover of darkness on the streets to pounce on their unsuspecting victims.

Cacien Nsekanabo, a trader at the Kiramuruzi sector told this website that lack of the street lights has led to break-ins in the area

“We are tired of thieves and every time we try to fight them, they fight back throwing stones on us. The authorities have to do something about it,” revealed Nsekanabo

Epiphanie Kavutse, executive secretary of Kiramuruzi sector says that several people have lost their merchandise, agricultural produce and phones to thieves under the heavy cloud of darkness.

Kavutse explained that his office has plans to install more street lights in the area to deter criminals from taking advantage of the cover of darkness to attack residents.
