Top FDLR-RUD rebel leader killed in Mai Mai attacks
The leader of FDLR-RUD the section of the Rwandaâ€™s genocide fugitive group FDLR based in Congo has been confirmed dead after recent heavy confrontations between the groups section based in Walikale at Mashuta and the Mai Mai militias.
According to impeccable sources form the section, Maj. Gen Jean-DamascÃ¨ne Ndibabaje alias Musare died on 8th February after his base was attacked by Mai mai militias leaving the section without a leader.
Sources say that the attacksÂ startedÂ in areas of Mukeberwa in northern Â part of Lubero which were started byÂ Mai MaiÂ Militias from areas ofÂ Buleusa in repatriationÂ of theÂ attacksÂ byÂ FDLR that hadÂ forced to retreat.
Eye witnesses say that Mai maiÂ attackedÂ MAj Gen Ndibabajeâ€™s base thatÂ forced him to flee in the nearbyÂ hills Â to call for support but Mai maiÂ militias according to witnessesÂ laid ambush in whichÂ him and hisÂ bodyÂ guard were killed.
â€œHeavyÂ fightingÂ started in the Generalâ€™s base where he flee toÂ the hills toÂ callÂ other soldiers for support butÂ mai maiÂ fighters had alreadyÂ reachedÂ and killed him,â€ the eye witnessÂ said.
The FDLR is made of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi fugitives who committed atrocities that resulted into massacre of 1 million Tutsis.
Joy Bokele, the head ofÂ Lubero Territory told radio Okapi that the fight between FDLR â€“RUD and Mai MaiÂ claimedÂ many lives of fighters and could not be easy forÂ the territory authorities and international Â organizations working in the area to establish the numbers.
Nevertheless, Bokele says authorities tried to establish 15 fighters that died on frontline while 5 sustained serious injuries at were taken to Mbwavinywa hospital 20 km from Mukeberwa.
TheÂ confrontations between theÂ Mai MaiÂ militias and FDLR-RUD startedÂ in Novemebr, 2015 asÂ conflict between Kinyarwanda speaking Congolese and the BandandiÂ peopleÂ in the area with the latter accusingÂ the former of allying with FDLR to loot crops and animals.
This lead to Bandandi youth ally with the Mai Mai NDC in Guidon to attack FDLR in Walikale and Lubero.
Meanwhile sources also say theÂ FDLR Foca section basedÂ atÂ RusamamboÂ has already beenÂ dismantled with Major general Agaston IyamuremyeÂ aliasÂ RumuliÂ with 100Â fighters fleeing toÂ Rutsuru in Makomamarehe.
