RDF says situation is under control after repulsing FDLR combatants
Rwanda Army last night repulsed FDLR rebels that launched an attack at a Police station in Rubavu district.
According to Lt Col René Ngendahimana the Deputy Spokesperson for defense ministry and RDF, “the situation on ground is under full control. The attackers were repulsed back by National Defence and Security Forces to DRC.”
He said in a brief statement that during the night of 15-16 April 2016, “suspected FDLR terrorists elements infiltrated our country from the DRC and attacked a Rwanda National Police Station in Rubavu District, Bugeshi Sector, Kabumba Cell.”
Eye witnesses said the rebels also attacked Bugeshi SACCO, a microfinance in the area. Bullets holes can be seen through the main door and glasses were broken. It is not clear whether the rebels might have wanted to rob the bank.
Area residents say they heard gunfire which lasted for about 50 minutes.
Security and local government officials today met the residents at Bugeshi Sector to discuss the situation and urged them to always provide timely information if they are suspicious about any persons or activities.
Mukandasira Caritas the western Province governor blamed Bugeshi residents for failing to provide timely information and also that there are some residents that shield infiltrators.
“It’s not understandable how unknown people would infiltrate and attack without the involvement of some residents. Unknown people cannot just enter here and take away lives,” Mukandasira said while meeting residents.
