Huye: Gacaca courts closure do not give room to genocide perpetrators- District Mayor

The fact that Gacaca courts period of bringing justice to people especially in genocide cases has ended does not mean that genocide perpetrators will be left free, Eugene Kayiranga Muzuka the mayor of Huye district stated on 25th.June.2012.

Rwanda | Huye Gacaca courts closureMuzuka said this after hearing to testimonies on how genocide was perpetrated in Mukura sector where names of genocide perpetrators were mentioned and most of who were not punished as they are even outside the country enjoying their luxury especially in South Africa.

“Gacaca courts were closed but that does not mean commemorating is over and it does not mean that those who did the worst sins against humanity that have not faced justice will be left free.” Muzuka said.

Mayor Muzuka reminded people that many people were killed in Butare town and in its neighbouring places that were coming from other prefecture that came seeking refuge from Butare because the prefect of Butare prefecture was a Tutsi but they were all killed with the prefect.

He said that this memorial period should be used in commemoration and to shame those who planned and executed genocide that was done by the country’s leaders.

He said that a good leader should be responsible for the life of his subjects and does not kill them. This is the time to say genocide should never happen again because Rwanda has got leaders with dreams and value of its citizens.
