Nyagatare: District officials order bars to open after work

NyagatareDistWith effect from 26June2012, Nyagatare district authorities with security officials of the area embarked on alcoholism eradication methods.

This followed many crimes committed in Nyagatare district as a result of drug abuse and drunkardness.

Mayor for Nyagatare district, Fred Sabiti Atuhe, ordered that all bars must open at 05:00 in the evening and close at 09:00 at night.

Mayor Sabiti affirms: “Whoever does the opposite of the order should be taken to the authorities immediately.”

Sabiti asked local leaders to report to the police residents who get drunk during working hours, so that the police take them to Nyagatare rehabilitation centre.

“We have a transit center, where idlers and drug addicts are brought. Bring the drunks so that they are taught how to behave,” adds Sabiti.

During the general security meeting on June 26th 2012 in Nyagatare district, security officials highlighted that they are concerned about drunkardness happening in some sectors of the district that border with Uganda.

Nyagatare district sectors that border with Uganda include Karama, Tabagwe, Kiyombe and Matimba.

“It’s very shameful to see even old women drunk at 10:00 in the morning,” lament security entities

Although the police head of Nyagatare asserts that Ugandan security officials are not part of the struggle to fight drug use because when they talk, they say its okay on the Ugandan side.

From May 25th to June 26th 2012, up to 117 crimes have been made in Nyagatare. 39 of them were taken to the courts of the law, 18 crimes were handled by reconciliation unit, 14 crimes settled by local leaders though some ended by the police.
