    Rubavu: NEC commemorates genocide victims

     The volunteers of National Electoral Commission (NEC) IN Rubavu district has  celebrated the liberation day on the 4th.July.2012 by commemorating the 1994 genocide against Tutsi victims.

    This program started early in the morning of the 4th.July was done in all memorial sites in 12 sectors that make up Rubavu district and ended at Gisenyi memorial site commonly known as “Commune Rouge”.

    The volunteers supported residents of the sectors they work in and walked while putting wreaths of flowers in places where many people lost their lives and on memorial sites and talking against genocide ideologies on their walk.

    Innocent Kabanda the coordinator of Ibuka in Rubavu district thanked NEC volunteers on this deed of commemoration and asked them to be near widows and orphans of genocide. He also said that in this year, people in Rubavu district participated in the 100 days memorial period compared to other years.

    “Now people owned memorial, schools, religions, private companies all participate in memorial program as they are part of it because of good leadership in this district.”

    Sheikh Hassan Bahame the district mayor said that commemoration will always be done as it shows that people are alive and that NEC is not only involved in elections but in all peoples programs and asked people to continue working and develop their country.

    Nassor Maguru a NEC and a coordinator of civic education in Nyabihu, Ngororero and Rubavu districts said that NEC volunteers decided to commemorate on liberation day because it means that they were liberated from bad governance that brought Rwandans to genocide.

    Maguru went on to say that all 2500 NEC volunteers contributed Rwf3.08million francs to rebuild Gisenyi memorial site and they also have 5million francs in a case that will be used in rescue missions. In 2011, NEC gave genocide survivors one cow and other small animals but home equipment.
