Rwanda | Nyaruguru district: Agriculture and Animal Husbandry community workers ushered
68 agriculture officials and partners in Nyaruguru district, Southern Rwanda,on Friday, agreed upon creating two brand new leadership strata, namely agriculture  and husbandry community workers, to enhance information-sharing regarding farming. The step is meant to boost productivity both in animal and crop farming.
The development trickles in after a meeting held in the Nyaruguru district conference hall, bringing together, top district leaders, veterinaries, agronomists and executive secretaries from Nyaruguru’s 14 sectors, district partners in the fields of agriculture and husbandry, plus delegates of farmers’ cooperatives across Nyaruguru district – to reflect on how best to move forward.
The two leadership instances, meant to be operational in a fortnight’s time, are set to consist of one agriculture community worker for each of Nyaruguru’s 332 imidugudu (locally villages, Rwanda’s smallest administrative units) and one husbandry counselor at the same level.
At the cell level – for all of Nyaruguru’s 72 cells – a famers’ committee will be established as well.
“An agriculture community worker, a husbandry worker, a farmers’ committee member, will be overseeing the day-to-day activities of farmers and animal farmers,†said Thomas Mbonyisenge, Nyaruguru district agronomist.
“The newly appointed people will report to higher  leaders in charge of agriculture in case of crop disease break-out, or any hindrances regarding agriculture, added Mbonyisenge.
This is going to be an unpaid role though, only that these leaders will be benefiting from training workshops and enjoying some working facilities.
