Rwanda : Census participation at 99.8 per cent

Census participation at 99.8 per cent

    NISR’s Yussuf Murangwa

The Rwanda National Institute of Statistics (NISR) has announced that the recently concluded national census was a success and participation was at 99.8 per cent.

This was said by the Director of NISR Yussuf Murangwa who hailed the public for being cooperative during the census period.

The Population and Housing Census which was the fourth of its kind to be carried out in Rwanda aimed at updating all population statistics provided in the previous census for proper planning. It will also determine the size of the population and the number of households.

Murangwa says that after the census the following activity will be to determine whether there are people who were never counted. This activity will begin from September 16 – 30.

According to NISR, preliminary population numbers will be announced before the end of this year, while the final ones will be announced at the end of next year.

The first census in Rwanda was conducted in 1978 and this census came to update the last one which was conducted in 2002.

The last one put the country’s population at 8,128,553. But population projections estimated the current population to be 11,033,141 in 2012.

The survey came as a fulfillment of a requirement by the United Nations which requires that a national census be carried out at least every ten years.
