Gisagara: District selects representatives to the National Children Summit
Gisagara district, Southern province of Rwanda hasselected 14 Children from 13 sectors making up the district to represent the district at the national children summit to be held on 04/01/2012 at the Parliamentary buildings inKimihurura,Kigali City.
The National Children’s Summit in Rwanda has been held annually since2004. The aim of the Summit is to involve Rwandan children in dialogue and decision making; to give children an opportunity to be heard on the issues that affect their lives.
This will be the 7th Summit, an integral part of the process of hearing from the children.
The theme of the 7th National Children’s Summit is ‘Children and Equity; our contribution to EDPRS’. This was chosen to ensure that children are engaged in the national dialogue on Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy so that their needs are advocated for and addressed in the planned strategies; taking their views into consideration.
Participants at the Summit will include children delegates representing sector and district children forum; representatives of vulnerable and children with disabilities, children from refugee camps, street children and orphans. In attendance also will be government officials, UNICEF and other partner organizations involved in child protection.
Children selected to represent others in Gisagara district praised the government of Rwanda for the great opportunity of contributing towards the country’s development process. They also told district authorities the way they have benefited from one laptop per child program and primary school electricity distribution program and also pledged to contribute much during the course of the summit.
The Summit will be a culmination of consultations that have taken place with children from the sector and district levels country wide. Children will present views gathered from the consultations.
