Nyagatare district sectors warned about drug abuse
a follow up is being made to inspect the way sectors in Nyagatare district are carrying out government program to fight against drugs among youth and sensitization on drugs and their effects in secondary schools.
In this follow up, they are trying to find out if there are announcements that call upon youth to avoid drugs in sectors, to see through reports if local leaders sensitized residents about effects of drugs, and protecting children below 18 years from using drugs through meeting, community work and all functions that bring many people.
According to Nyagatare district worker in charge of youth, culture and sports, 8 among the 14 sectors in the district they have already visited, they all followed the given guidelines to fight against drug abuse in youth and this was proved by drugs they found at Tabagwe, Karama, Rukomo and Kiyombe sectors that were caught through authorities working with residents who would tip them where drugs are sold.
Among the drugs that were caught, there is packed liquor commonly known as Chief Waragi, Suzi, Leading and local brew (waragi).
According to the research made by the Rwanda National Police, 80% of local brew and drugs that were caught in 2011, were sold or used by youth. Only in 2011, 2090Kilograms of drugs were caught being used or sold by the youth and 7051 liters of local brew (Kanyanga)
Because of these statistics, in the campaign to fight against drug youth, youth are much emphasized and that is why in this campaign many debates were done in secondary schools in this district like GS Kabare II, GS Mukama, GS Gishororo, ETP Nyarurema, GS Ndego, GS Tabagwe, GS Rukomo, GS Katabagemu, GS Nyakigando and GS Cyabayaga.
