    Rwanda: Government pays tribute to residents

    A government envoy for eradication of grass thatched houses “nyakatsi” led by Brigadier General Jacques Musemakweli has acknowledged Ngororero district’s effort on the issue.

    During the program of monitoring how districts are doing concerning combating Nyakatsi, government team members thanked Ngororero district for the step taken in fighting the matter, a comment made during the recent visit of the team to the area.

    In the presence of Mayor and executive secretaries from 13 sectors that make this district, Brig.Gen. Musemakweli stretched that Ngororero deserves a winners’ cup for ranking number two after Kamonyi in fighting nyakatsi.

    Ngororero district is among the districts that are low concerning finances but has been able to beat other districts in implementing fighting nyakatsi program.

    Also, Ngororero is credited for being the only district to officially launch fighting nyakatsi program in Western province.

    One of the team members from MINALOC Engineer William, says that performance contracts was an idea of people that gathered to put in place approaches of eradicating grass thatched houses.

    These approaches include coordination, cooperation, communication and giving correct information of what has happened.

    Engineer William emphasizes that this method used will be used in land consolidation program and village settlement for residents.

    Out of 910 houses that were needed in fighting nyakatsi campaign, 610 houses were built in Ngororero district. Also houses that now need doors have been given to 34 families that could not afford to build.

    National police pledged 20 doors and 110 toilets have been built for those who didn’t have one for sanitation purposes.

    Gedeon Ruboneza, district mayor stretches that fighting nyakatsi has showed them that all is possible and their next move is giving livestock to those that got houses to help them fight poverty.

    A detailed report on the implementation of this program will be out in April 2nd 2012 as the team members reveal.

    Fighting nyakatsi program in Rwanda was started by H.E Paul Kagame in abid to improve the housing conditions of Rwandese.
