Karama: Heroes of Genocide against Tutsis to be acknowledged
1994 genocide against Tutsi survivors in Kamonyi district, have requested for names of the Individuals who hid some Tutsi during genocide for the purposes of expressing gratitude.
This was highlighted on April 22nd 2012 at Bunyonga memorial site in Bibare forest when residents gathered for 18th commemoration of 1994 Tutsi victims in Karama sector.
After reading out the names of Tutsi that were killed in this place, Emmanuel Manishimwe who testified on how he survived genocide noted: “No Tutsi would have survived if there were no kind hearted Hutus.â€
Manishimwe explained how several Hutus kept on hiding him including one old man who stopped “Interahamwe†from killing him with a sharp piece of wood.
To second the idea, Jean Kayonga from Karama sector requested that the names of those people (Hutus) who got courage to spare the Tutsi should be made known so that residents show them gratitude.
In this sector, a big step has been taken concerning unity and reconciliation. For example paying back the looted property has been accomplished and even genocide participants contributed Rwf600.000 to help vulnerable genocide survivors.
