Kamonyi district buries 504 genocide victims’ bodies

Rwanda | Kamonyi district buriesVictims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis numbering 504 Bodies have been given a decent burial in Mugina Genocide Memorial Site, on Thursday 26th April 2012.

15 of the buried bodies were recently retrieved as collection of more than a million Tutsis’ bodies is still difficult, where the other 489 Bodies were collected from other temporary cemeteries created immediately after genocide.

“Tutsis of Runda, Taba, Ntongwe, Bugesera and Mugina areas all came to seek refuge and security at Mugani Parish.” Explained Mugina Sector Executive Jean Marie Rwiririza

Kamonyi District Mayor Jacques Rutsinga said that Tutsis sought refuge in Mugina Sector because its then executive (Burgomaster) Callixte Ndagijimana was against the then government’s genocide deeds.

“Mugina Tutsis were killed by then government’s soldiers and Hutu refugees from Burundi, who killed the then Burgomaster Callixte Ndagijimana first.” Explained the Mayor

National Coordinator of IBUKA Janvier Forongo called for justice of the Genocide victims especially in getting back refunds of their damaged properties during the genocide.

There is also still a puzzling problem of the then Genocide perpetuators who were Burundian refugees in Rwandan but now returned back to Burundi and cannot be sued by current government of Rwanda.
