Gakenke : Youth urged to be champions of positive change
During an event to conclude the civic education training commonly known as Itorero ry’Igihugu meant for secondary school leavers on 14th December 2011, the youth were called upon to be catalysts for the positive change towards the socio-economic life of their communities.
Hon. Uwamariya Pelagie, who was the guest of honour asked the youth to spearhead the socio-economic  development of the residents. She further told youth to work hard, strive for diginity and values they learnt from itorero by becoming good examples in their sectors of origin.
Mukaneza Marie Reine, a participant says she is going to create work as taught instead of waiting to be employed. Itorero helped me to understand the government programs and my role as a resident in developing the country basing on Rwandan values, Mukaneza adds.
Muhire Bonaventure also a participant assured to sensitize expectant mothers to give birth from hospitals, explain to the neighours the advantages of land consolidation and taking part in all other government programs.
Itorero ry’Igihugu is a home-grown initiative which is aimed at encouraging Rwandans to join the efforts in ensuring the country’s development.
Created in November 2007, the program was mandated to preserve the Rwandan culture by promoting a mentality change and responsiveness towards the country’s development agenda.
It aims at promoting values of unity, truth, culture of hard work while avoiding attitudes and mindsets that deter development.
