Rulindo district mayor Justus Kangwagye says that mines depict how the environment was destroyed and it will show how the environment was conserved after the place is levelled to normal.
“This place looks like a desert now, but after levelling we shall plant tea on it so that everybody understands that the spoilt environment can be conserved,†laments Mayor Kangwagye.
Although residents use the mines looking for gold, they are punished when caught and some two residents lost their lives in the mines recently. Local leadership cannot just sit and look over, asserts Kangwagye.
Kangwagye adds: “One of the two victims left a wife and two children, and now we have orphans and a widow. We cannot fail to intervene in this issue of gold mining.â€
Aime Bosenibamwe, Northern Province Governor affirms that people who gain from this mining are few yet the consequences are faced by many.
