Alleged thieves arrested
Kicukiro district police has in custody seven men, suspected for stealing a Fuso truck belonging to Edward Rutayisire, a trader in Matheus neighborhood.
According to police sources, Callixte Nsengiyumva, the driver, stole the truck from Magerwa parking area and headed to Muyumbu in Rwamagana district, where he hid it before he returned to Kigali to seek for potential buyers.
Involved in the truck scandal are; Samuel Nkongoli, a spare part dealer in Gatsata.Nkongoli mobilized more five mechanics in Gatsata, who went to Rwamagana to dismantal the truck and sell it in spare parts.
If it wasn’t for a fight on who takes what after the spare parts are sold, the deal would have been sealed without anyone’s notice, however after selling a few spare parts of the truck, the team went for a drink in Kabuga where they fought about who would take the biggest share, which ignited a fight that publicized the matter.
Sensing the likelihood of arrest, Nkongoli called a police officer at Gikondo police station claiming he heard the thieves who were fighting for a stolen car.
A protection department of the Rwanda Revenue Authority was quickly dispatched to intervene and Nkongoli suggested he would lead them to the thieves with the promise that he would not be arrested.
However, the promise was not given value since the police soon discovered that in fact Nkongoli was part of the gang from the beginning.
Rutayisire the owner of the stolen truck praised the efforts of the police to arrest the robbers after collecting the pieces of his vehicle.
“I am delighted that the thugs could not leave with my vehicle,” said Rutayisire.
If found guilty, Nsengiyumva and his group are likely to spend up to five years in prison for breach of trust under section 424 of the Rwandan Penal Code.
