Rwanda : Gov’t to save over Rwf2billion from new prison feeding arrangement
The Government is set to save an estimated whooping Rwf2 billion annually from the new prison feeding arrangement which will see prisoners eat processed food as opposed to preparing their own.
This was announced by the Security Minister Sheikh Musa Fazil Harerimana on Wednesday while officially launching the new initiative in the Southern based Gitarama prison.
According to the Minister, the prisoners and inmates at Gitarama will begin having the already cooked food this Friday.
The food which includes maize and beans, the minister said will be well cooked and more nutritious.
The food will be having up to 2, 500 calories as opposed to the normal 2, 100 calories food that the inmates have been preparing for themselves.
Harferiman said that the decision was taken to reduce the burden that was put on the inmates to cook and resulted in having their food so late and to also reduce on the cost of preparing the food.
Food preparation will be prepared by Rwanda Agri Business Industries situated in Huye district. The factory will be preparing the food and package it before delivering the various prisons.
The factory will also in a two months period start delivering breakfast porridge to prisons as per the arrangement.
