The police in Ngoma district in the Eastern Province is holding a man for bribing policemen. Jean Baptist Nzabonimana 26, a resident of Nyagasozi cell, Zaza Sector in Ngoma District was allegedly attempting to bribe a police officer in order to bail out his motorcycle. He is currently detained at Kibungo Police Station.

Police says Nzabonimana’s motorcycle, registration number RB 704I, had been seized after he was found with no driving license and other related documents required.

The suspect, who had earlier argued that he had all the required documents, when he was stopped while transporting a passenger, had been told to fetch those particulars before taking his motorcycle.

This prompted him to use other illegal means of bribing the police officer with Rwf20, 000, to seduce him to release his motorcycle.

His wrong move, however, turned sour when the brave officer informed his colleagues and they arrested him in the act.

Ngoma District Police Commander, Superintendent Victor Rubamba advised the public to avoid risky moves and acquire driving documents.

“Bribery or corruption comes with heavy consequences, and the public should beware of that,” he said.

The Eastern Province Police Spokesperson, Senior Superintendent Beniot Nsengiyumva praised the bravery of the officer to ignore such illegal attempts to execute his duties as mandated.

SSP Nsengiyumva appealed to the public to strengthen their partnership with concerned authorities and “continue the slogan of saying no to corruption.

If found guilty Nzabonimana will be charged under Article 641 of the penal code. It which states that “any person who explicitly or implicitly offers, proposes directly or indirectly a gift or any other illegal benefit, to a person in charge of a service, mission or mandate or who promises it in order to render a service or to refrain from carrying out any usual duties, shall be liable to a term of imprisonment of more than five years to seven years and a fine of twice to ten times the value of the illegal benefit he/she offered or promised.
