Rwanda | Mauritius investors to establish fertiliser factory
A delegation of investors from Mauritius has informed the Prime Minister, Pierre Damien Habumuremyi that they intend to invest in several sectors including production of fertilisers in Rwanda.
Private sector federation president, Faustin Kananura Mbundu, who had accompanied the delegation, told the press after the Prime Minister’s meeting February 17, that the investors would setup a fertiliser factory.
“This factory will assist us in safeguarding and protecting the environment because it will recycle plastic bags, as well as provide employment,†said Mbundu.
Rwanda spends about $30million annually on importing fertilisers which are distributed to farmers at subsidised prices. In some cases, farmers who are not able to purchase them are given for free.
The Mauritius investors will also put capital into setting up a new garbage dumping site to replace the one at Nyanza, in Kigali. The prime minister has already ordered the closure of the site which has turned more into a health and environmental hazard.
